🇺🇦 Between Grief and Hope: Ukrainian Flag Day and Independence Day

On 23 August, Ukraine celebrates the Day of its National Flag. One day later, on 24 August, one of the country’s most important days follows: the 35th anniversary of its independence. For FIZE, both days have a special significance this year.

The photo accompanying this article was taken in Odesa in July 2026. The Ukrainian flag alongside the flag of the European Union – an image that expresses much of what we encountered during our conversations on the ground.

Yet in the photo, the Ukrainian flag is flying at half-mast. So is the flag of the city of Odesa. They commemorate the people who have been killed by Russian attacks. In recent weeks, particularly throughout July and August, Odesa and the region have repeatedly faced attacks, destruction, injuries and deaths.

Alongside them, the European flag continues to fly high. So does the black-and-white Flag of Hope – with its symbolism of the journey from darkness into light.

For us, there is a particular message in this juxtaposition: grief for those who have died, and at the same time the determination not to give up hope or one’s own vision of the future.

Independence and a European Future

The blue-and-yellow flag stands for a sovereign state, for its identity and for the determination of its people to decide their own future. At the same time, Ukraine sees this future as a European future. The country is a candidate for EU membership and has embarked on its path towards the European Union. The European flag alongside the Ukrainian one is therefore more than a symbol of international solidarity. It also represents a political and societal orientation that Ukraine itself has chosen.

Especially on Independence Day, these two ideas belong together: Ukraine’s statehood and national independence, and its right to decide for itself which path it wishes to take in the future.

MICT UA: Building Bridges for a Shared Future

For FIZE, Flag Day and Independence Day also have a special significance this year because initial ideas have since developed into personal encounters, conversations and concrete cooperation in Ukraine. With our initiative MICT UA, we aim to build bridges between Germany and Ukraine. Our particular focus is on young Ukrainians who are currently living in Germany and other European countries and for whom a future return to Ukraine can become a realistic personal and professional prospect.

Odesa is the first pilot region for MICT UA. Our conversations and encounters there have once again shown us that reconstruction will not only be a question of buildings, infrastructure or investment. It will equally depend on giving people prospects for the future and on strengthening the connections between Ukraine and its European partners over the long term.

For us, Ukrainian Independence Day is therefore not only an occasion to look back. It is equally an occasion to think about the future. We congratulate our partners, our friends and all the people of Ukraine on Ukrainian Flag Day and the 35th anniversary of independence.
